The short answer

Plan around your guests and serving time. Choose a manageable mix of starters, mains and sides, and finalise dish availability and kitchen requirements with your chef.

Build the menu around the guest list

A children’s birthday with adults joining later needs a different food plan from a sit-down family celebration. Decide whether food will be served as snacks, a full meal or both. Ask about allergies and food preferences before choosing dishes; avoid assuming that a familiar snack is suitable for every guest.

Keep the serving time aligned with the rest of the celebration. If cake-cutting is planned between snacks and dinner, leave room in the menu rather than selecting several rich desserts by default. These are planning suggestions, not a fixed package or a promise that every dish will suit every kitchen.

Starter ideas: keep them easy to share

Paneer tikka, vegetable cutlets and small sandwiches are examples to discuss for a vegetarian snack selection. Pick starters with different textures rather than several nearly identical fried items. For non-vegetarian guests, discuss a suitable alternative and any separate preparation requirements with the chef.

Make spice preferences explicit, especially where children and adults will share dishes. Check the equipment required for grilled or baked dishes. The examples in this guide are inspiration: confirm the final named menu and suitability for your kitchen before buying ingredients.

Main-course ideas: choose a coherent meal

For a North Indian-style meal, you could discuss a paneer main, dal, a rice dish, and suitable breads or sides. Another option is to build the meal around a rice dish with complementary accompaniments. A coherent menu is easier to shop for and serve than an assortment of unrelated favourites.

Think about vegetarian and non-vegetarian choices, how dishes will be kept ready for serving, and which items depend on last-minute cooking. The photo menu can help you browse, but use the final menu discussion to check ingredients and equipment rather than treating the pictures as a ready-made package.

Desserts and drinks: leave room for the cake

If a birthday cake is already part of the celebration, an additional dessert is optional. A small sweet dish or fruit-based option may be enough, depending on your guests and the meal. Arrange the cake separately unless you have explicitly agreed otherwise; booking a party chef is not automatically a cake or decoration order.

For drinks, decide whether you want a simple welcome drink or a separate beverage selection. Look My Cook’s dish counters include Soup & Beverage alongside starters, mains, breads and sides, and desserts. If you need a bartender, review that optional staff service separately rather than assuming it is included with the chef.

Turn the ideas into your booking

Choose your city, date, serving time, people and dish counts to see your quote. Look My Cook’s guest count includes people aged four and above. You can select named dishes from the optional menu before booking or finalise them after the advance, within the counts you paid for.

The chef does not bring ingredients or utensils. After advance payment, the chef is assigned and the ingredient list is shared on WhatsApp. Shop from the final list and make your cookware and serving dishes available. Chef arrival time and service duration depend on the final guest count and menu.

Pay 50% to book and the remaining 50% to the chef after service. Date-specific prices and optional add-ons can affect the total, so check your booking summary. For the birthday itself, keep a short written plan: food serving time, cake timing, dietary notes and who is handling service.

  • Agree on starters, mains, sides and any dessert.
  • Share allergies and spice preferences.
  • Finalise dishes within your booked counts.
  • Arrange ingredients, utensils and serving dishes.
